Aelanius: Solonomon Islands joins Pacific Islands regional trade

(December 13, 2013) Solomon Islands became the 8thForum Island Country to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Pacific Regional Trade and Development Facility (the Facility) joining Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
While signing the MoU for the Government of Solomon Islands, Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Clay Forau Soalaoi highlighted the importance of Aid for Trade for Pacific Island economies.

“Solomon Islands supports this initiative and looks forward to the Facility being operationalised as we expect this Facility will assist the Solomon Islands and our Pacific Island neighbours in pooling Aid for Trade resources and coordinating its use, and implementation of regional aid for trade projects,” says Hon. Forau.

“Investing in the development of trade will assist our economies to provide employment and improve the livelihood of our people. The MoU provides the region with a great opportunity for coordinated efforts in trade facilitation, promotion and capacity building activities that will enhance and maximise the benefits from the resources available to the Pacific region. The Solomon Islands looks forward to benefiting from such arrangements.”

The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Tuiloma Neroni Slade thanked the Government of Solomon Islands for its commitment to the MoU and to the establishing of the Facility.

“The Pacific Regional Trade and Development Facility seeks to provide regional trade-related assistance to the Pacific Islands and invites development partners to contribute to the facility,” says Mr. Slade. “I congratulate Solomon Islands for joining other Forum Island Countries today in signing the MoU.”

The Facility is expected to play a vital role in assisting development partners in coordinating their Aid for Trade resources for the Pacific region.

Hon. Forau, recognising the importance of the Facility in securing Aid for Trade resources, mentioned that Solomon Islands looks forward to the remaining Pacific ACP states signing the MoU.

The MoU is now open for signatures by other Pacific Island countries, development partners and regional and international organizations.
